One of the unique features of AirLink is its commitment to security without central servers. This means that unlike other apps where you simply add a phone number, AirLink requires a "secure handshake" to establish a trusted connection between two devices. This process ensures that only the intended recipient can read your messages.
Why QR Code Pairing?
We use QR codes for the initial handshake because they allow for an out-of-band exchange of cryptographic keys. By scanning your friend's QR code in person, you are performing a physical authentication that no remote hacker can replicate. This exchange sets up the **Signal Protocol** session that will encrypt all your future conversations.
Step-by-Step Guide
Open the Discovery Screen
On both devices, open AirLink and navigate to the "Discovery" tab. Ensure that Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled on both phones.
Show and Scan
One user should tap "Show My QR Code" while the other user taps "Scan Peer QR". Position the camera so the code is clearly visible within the frame.
Confirm Identity
Once scanned, both devices will calculate a "Safety Number." Compare these numbers on your screens. If they match, tap "Verify" to establish the session.
Start Chatting
Your devices are now securely paired. You can send messages, photos, and voice notes. These will now be able to travel across the mesh network even if you are no longer standing next to each other.
What if I can't meet in person?
While physical pairing is the most secure method, you can also share your Public Key link through other secure channels. However, for maximum security and to enable full mesh routing capabilities, we always recommend the QR handshake whenever possible.
